Sweetwater Cuisine hosted the first ever Bourbon, Boots, and Blues event to raise awareness for the Daniel’s Grace Charitable Foundation on March 29, and the New Orleans themed party featured Creole and Cajun foods, including po boys, seafood etouffee, and muffulettas.  The evening also included a raffle, a photo booth, and plenty of chances to dance to music by bluegrass band and local favorite Jackass Flats.

The Daniel’s Grace Charitable Foundation is a nonprofit which supports cancer families emotionally and financially so they can focus on healing by assisting with cobra insurance premiums, provides rent and mortgage assistance, groceries, academic scholarships, and grief counseling.

Jodi Moore Newland, founder and executive director of Daniel’s Grace, has a personal connection to the foundation; she lost her first husband to colon cancer when he was only 32 years old, and the foundation was created in his memory.

The nonprofit’s next function, Roast on the River at Steinhilber’s in Virginia Beach, will take place on November 4; last year’s raised over $200,000.

Bourbon, Boots, and Blues will be an annual occurrence; Newland commented that the organization wanted to have a different kind of event, and wanted people to come and let their hair down.  Not only were people able to gather together to dance a two step and have some great food, March 29 was also recognized by Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms as Daniel’s Grace Foundation Day in the city.
