Fitz’s Finds: Designer Beverages

I am always on the hunt for something unique to eat or drink in Hampton Roads. In an area still underrated by many as a food scene, my experience has been that all you have to do is get out there and look in the Seven Cities to find exciting tastes that those less engaged with our local food will tell you aren’t available here.

From the tasty kimbap served on a warped Tupperware dish in the back of Grand Mart on Newtown, to the made from scratch levain based bread The Bakehouse at Chelsea turns out in Norfolk daily; the Afghan offerings at Mazari on North Witchduck in Virginia Beach, or say the seared caramelized yogurt Chef Eric Nelson now at Chops at the oceanfront has been known to serve, I thought it was time to highlight some tastes I’ve found locally that are exciting me. This time around I’m sharing with you some designer beverages that unconventionally tantalized my taste buds.

1. Having already popularized a beet beer, dubbed The Trial of Dmitri, Benchtop Owner and Brewer Eric Tennant is at it again with the veggies, this time crafting the Quick Pickle, Carrot and Cucumber Gose. It is an enticingly sour beer despite the sweetness found in carrots and balanced so well you get the delicate cucumber on the back end.

2. Raw, vegan, and delightfully creamy? Yeah, you heard me right! The Pistachio MYLKS at Town Center Cold Pressed utilizes the fat content in the nut, making for one decadent guilty pleasure of a drink. It’s one in a growing line of handcrafted drinks that is making the new place in Ghent a regular visit of mine.

3. Can’t tolerate gluten but want to fill your gullet with a great craft beer? Wasserhund has got you covered with their Passionfruit Pineapple Ale. Brewed with honey and sorghum, it’s a fruity hit everyone can enjoy!
